Volusia County Trustees Rethink
No-Filter Policy

Blocking software may be coming to the children's area terminals of the Volusia County (Fla.) Library thanks to a complaint Stephany Burkard filed on August 21 with the sheriff's office. Burkard, who was volunteering at the library, approached authorities two days after a DeBary Branch staffer told her nothing could be done to stop two male patrons from displaying nude images on library terminals because VCL doesn't restrict Internet access. Burkard resigned over the incident.

Although trustees decided against filters last year for lack of public interest, some two-dozen area residents angrily insisted on restrictive measures at a September 4 board meeting that three pro-filter Volusia County Council members also attended, the Orlando Sentinel reported September 5.

"If people want to access these awful, awful places, they should go home, get their own computer," board chair Claudia Hutchins declared. A final decision on filters awaits a recommendation about the best method to employ.
