Plan to Auction Library Building Dismays Senior CenterThe director of a senior citizens center hoping to take over the old Des Plaines (Ill.) Public Library building after a new downtown library is constructed next summer said she was "taken aback" upon seeing a newspaper advertisement announcing a fall auction for the 42,000-square-foot building. "We've met previously with library officials," said Sharon Smith, whose group hopes to make an offer on the library but needs at least 16 months to raise the money. "We're afraid we might not be able to compete with the highest bidder," she told the Chicago Tribune. Library Board President John Burke apologized for the failure to better publicize the library's plans. "Many people see the value in preserving this old building," he noted. However, he said his primary responsibility is to raise enough money to outfit the new facility. The Tribune reported September 10 that both Burke and Smith held out hope that a mutually satisfactory deal could be worked out. Posted September 14, 1998. |
