Nancy Kranich, C. James Schmidt Are Candidates for ALA PresidentNancy Kranich, associate dean at New York University's Bobst Library, and C. James Schmidt, university librarian at San Jose State University in California, have accepted nominations to compete for the 2000–2001 ALA presidency. Kranich recently completed four years of service on the ALA Executive Board and is widely recognized for her involvement in legislative issues. Schmidt is a former president of the Freedom to Read Foundation and is well known for his expertise in areas of intellectual freedom. The nine-member ALA Nominating Committee was chaired by Molly Raphael, director of the District of Columbia Public Library. The mail-ballot election will be held this spring, and the winner will serve as vice-president/president-elect in 1999-2000. The year-long ALA presidency runs from mid-year to mid-year, beginning and concluding at ALA Annual Conferences. Posted September 21, 1998. |
