Louisiana Librarians Say Schools Renege on Book PromiseAbout 30 school librarians attended August budget hearings, hoping to persuade the Orleans (La.) Parish School Board in New Orleans to reconsider how library funds are allocated. Their argument: Some principals are not spending money on library books as voters had been promised. School Librarian Ellen Pecoul told American Libraries that school board campaign literature said money from the renewal of a 2.3-mill tax in May would be used to purchase library books. But she noted that only 15 out of 103 schools are using the tax money in their libraries. Associate Superintendent Linda Stelly said no amounts for library books were specified and that individual schools can decide how to spend their money. She maintained that the board is sympathetic to the librarians and is looking at ways to increase funding in the new budget. Posted September 14, 1998. |
