Forum Held on Shared San Jose Library

The city of San Jose, California, and San Jose State University held a joint public forum August 31 to discuss the controversial proposal for a library to be shared by the university and the city. According to the September 1 San Jose Mercury News, faculty and students are concerned about access to essential reading materials for history and English courses, and the disruption of the university's studious atmosphere. City users worry that the increased costs of operation will force their branch libraries to close or cut back hours.

However, Assistant City Manager Darrell Dearborn told the audience that "there is no prospect in the foreseeable future of the city having any significant improvement to its main library" without a collaboration. The project would be funded by the city's redevelopment agency and the university, which is depending on passage of a $9.5 billion education bond measure in November.
