ALA's "America Links Up" Campaign
Is Launched in Washington

National Town Hall in Washington, D.C., was the venue for the debut September 15 of "America Links Up," a national Internet public-awareness campaign that provides children and adults with information on the educational uses of the Internet.

The event, held in conjunction with Kids Online Week, September 14-20, was the result of a December 1997 Internet summit on child safety online. Some 225 libraries in more than 30 states participated last week in teach-ins on Internet basics for parents, teachers, and other caregivers. The campaign is sponsored by ALA along with some 50 other educational organizations and Internet-related companies.

ALA President Ann K. Symons told the audience of roughly 200 that "we want parents to know there are places they can go to learn, even if they don't have a computer at home." Also on the podium was Secretary of Education Richard Riley.

Elements of the campaign include a Web site, a teach-in toolkit, two public service announcements, an Internet safety video, and an educational forum program hosted by CNN's Miles O'Brien.
