In an effort to foster interest in math and science in youngsters, telecommunications firm BellSouth plans to donate 7,000 books to elementary schools and public libraries in its nine-state region.
The books, The Math Wiz and The Gadget War, written by Betsy Duffey, are designed to create enthusiasm for math and science by featuring kids who use those skills to solve life problems. BellSouth CEO Duane Ackerman said that as students return to class, "we want to encourage children's interest, knowledge, and skills in math, science, and technology to help them prepare to be effective citizens and employees in the information age.
Schools and libraries who receive service from BellSouth can request the titles by faxing to 770-439-9108, Attn: BellSouth Neighborhood Whiz Kids/Book Donation or mailing to 5001 McNeel Industrial Way, Powder Springs, GA 30127. The company also offers a "Neighborhood Whiz Kids" Web site.
