Three More State Library Groups Take Anti-Filtering StandsThree more state library groups have officially declared their opposition to federal- or state-mandated filtering in libraries. The Minnesota Library Association endorsed "full and free access to the Internet in libraries" at its October 7-9 meeting, explaining that blocking software keeps patrons from materials "they determine to be most suitable for themselves." The New Hampshire Library Association denounced blocking software on library computers on October 14, advocating "the installation of privacy screens or placing workstations away from public view to protect users' confidentiality." Echoing an earlier stand taken by the Montana Public Library Directors, the Montana Library Association's Academic Special Libraries Division decried filter edicts on October 2 as violating "the rights of local citizens to exert local control." Also weighing in recently are library organizations in Georgia, Kansas, Virginia, Rhode Island, and North Carolina. |
