Over Director's Objections, Trustees Approve Children's-Area Filters

Over the objections of Director Jane Rustin, the board of the Allegany County (Md.) Library has unanimously approved the installation of filtering software on all children's-area computers systemwide. To ensure that their decision won't decrease the number of unfiltered public-access terminals, trustees also instructed Rustin to purchase an extra Internet workstation for each of ACL's five existing branches plus an additional site currently under construction.

Acknowledging the "good intentions" of her board, Rustin reaffirmed her conviction that "we should not abridge the right of any citizen, including children, to access information." At the October 5 meeting librarians from three area colleges testified in favor of Rustin's position, the Cumberland Times-News reported October 6.

Calling accusations of censorship "a smokescreen," Pastor Lee Capper thanked the board for treating the proposal as "an issue of common sense." Capper first complained about ACL's unfettered access this summer, when his wife and son chanced upon a pornographic image at a library terminal.
