Mold Forces Bonita Springs Public Library ShutdownIncreased mold and humidity have endangered the 74,000-item collection at the Bonita Springs (Fla.) Public Library, forcing it to close up to three months for air-conditioning replacement. When the facility was expanded in 1992 from 5,000 to 11,800 square feet, planners failed to adequately upgrade the air conditioning to accommodate added space, the September 29 Naples Daily News reported. Branch librarian Emily Edwards told American Libraries, "No one knows exactly when we'll close, but it will have to be soon to protect and preserve our books." Jim Lavender, director of planning and construction for Lee County, told the Fort Myers News-Press that ideally the humidity level in a library should never rise above 50%; the level at Bonita Springs creeps near 62% during the summer. Edwards said the temperature gauge in the children's section read 67% humidity October 1. Posted October 5, 1998. |
