Infoseek Founder Funds Internet Upgrade for Santa Clara County

The Santa Clara County (Calif.) Library system will replace 200 outdated computer terminals early next year, thanks to a donation from the founder of the Infoseek Internet navigation service

Infoseek Corporation Chair Steve Kirsch gave the library $200,000 to purchase new, Internet-enabled terminals for its 10 branches. The gift was officially presented at the library's October 22 board meeting.

"The rapid change of technology equipment demands makes it very difficult for a public education institution to provide the latest information services," said library board Chair Barbara Conant. "We have struggled more each year to fund even a basic level of technology. It is wonderful to see a young Silicon Valley entrepreneur reach out to the community so generously."

"We hope that this gift will encourage other Internet companies to give to their local community libraries and help us get another step closer to the goal of universal Internet access for all," said Kirsch.
