IMLS Announces National Leadership Grants

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) awarded 41 grants totaling $6,487,750 on September 28 for the first National Leadership Grants to be awarded by the agency; previously the grants were provided by the Department of Education. The awards support nationally replicable library projects that address education, research, preservation, and library-museum partnerships.

The IMLS also announced 12 grants totaling $1,139,100 for library service to Native Americans in Indian tribal communities and Alaskan native villages. The Native Hawaiian Library Services grant in the amount of $365,850 was awarded to Alu Like, Inc., a private, nonprofit organization serving the native Hawaiian community.

In addition, the 1998 Museum Leadership Initiatives Awards were given to 14 museums to support innovative partnerships between museums and community-based organizations, including libraries.

A complete listing of grant recipients is available on the IMLS Web site.
