Cable TV Industry Offers Libraries Free High-Speed Internet HookupsExpanding its two-year-old program to connect all the nation's schools to the Internet with free high-speed cable modems, the cable television industry announced September 30 that it would make the same commitment to public libraries. Plans are to connect the libraries as their local cable companies add the high-speed data services in their communities. More than 2,500 schools have thus far received free hookups through the program. "Now, in addition to students and teachers in schools across the country, entire communities will be able to benefit from this initiative through their local public library," said National Cable Television Association President Decker Anstrom. ALA President Ann Symons applauded the announcement. "Combined with the new e-rate discounts on telecommunications services, this new public-service initiative of the cable industry will provide much needed assistance in helping public libraries connect their users with the most advanced frontiers of cyberspace."
