Broward Board Considers Downsized ExpansionThe county commissioners of Broward County, Florida, received a new, less expensive plan for the revitalization of county public libraries September 28. If the commission approves the new plan, voters could be asked to decide in a March referendum whether to issue bonds to pay for it. According to Library Director Samuel Morrison the original $250-million proposal, which the commission rejected in August, has been scaled down to $167 million to be spent over five years instead of seven. The new plan still recommends two 72,000-square-foot regional libraries, Morrison told American Libraries, but the projected size of other planned facilities has been reduced. A workshop, at which Morrison will present the plan, has been scheduled for October 6 to gather input from a library advisory board, the Friends, and the library foundation. Posted October 5, 1998. |
