Arkansas Supreme Court Removes Property Tax Repeal from Ballot

The Arkansas Supreme Court unanimously ruled October 15 to remove a proposal from the upcoming ballot that would have amended the state constitution to abolish property taxes.

The justices said that the proposal's backers "ignored and abused" the procedures to change the state's constitution, and that they failed to obtain enough valid signatures to put the measure on the November 3 ballot, the Associated Press reported October 16.

Arkansans to Protect Police, Libraries, Education, and Services (APPLES) was among the groups who filed the suit, maintaining that the measure's ballot title was misleading and that signatures were gathered improperly. APPLES said that if the proposal were to pass, Arkansas's public libraries would all be forced to close.
