The objections of Gary Vose, a Kettle Moraine School District board member whose daughter attends Kettle Moraine Middle School, to the library's Rolling Stone magazine subscription has led to a Curriculum Committee revision of the district selection policy. Approved in principle October 5, the proposal would give the suburban Milwaukee school board final approval over acquisitions.
Last November, Vose complained about the subscription, becoming particularly upset over the November 27 cover, which featured Saturday Night Live cast members touching themselves and each other suggestively.
"This policy just says that there's a variety of people that participate in the selecting and recommending process, and I think that's healthy," Assistant Superintendent Maurice Sullivan told the October 6 Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel about the policy he drafted. "Accountability is obviously very important," Kettle Moraine Middle School librarian Jody Goswitz agreed. "I don't feel like I have total authority."
The committee is scheduled to revisit the proposal's wording in November before sending it to the full board.
