Official Seeks End to Gwinnett Board Discord

Complaints about improper library book discards that Gwinnett County (Ga.) Library board Vice-president Ann MacLeod levied has led to some private advice on working cooperatively from Gwinnett County Commission President Wayne Hill, who called MacLeod, board Chairman Andy Pourcier, and Director Jo Ann Pinder into his office October 14.

"I was grieved and overwhelmed," MacLeod told the Gwinnett Daily Post September 24 of 24 bags of weeded books several outraged patrons found in a Mountain Park branch dumpster. But Pinder told American Libraries that all the titles were deselected per library policy, which calls for discarding damaged or outdated titles instead of remanding them to the Friends bookstore.

At the meeting, Hill merely sought to offer trustees communication "tips" such as "digesting" relevant information before acting. He's held such sessions before, Pinder explained, both before and after trustees debated the establishment and subsequent recission of a parent advisory section for mature materials.
