Suit Filed Against Internet Subsidies for Parochial SchoolsThe Freedom from Religion Foundation filed suit earlier this month in U.S. District Court in Madison, Wisconsin, challenging a state program that offers telecommunications subsidies to parochial schools and religious colleges. The Madison-based group claims the Educational Telecommunications Access program violates First Amendment principles that mandate the separation of church and state. The program is part of Wisconsin's Technology for Educational Achievement initiative, a multimillion-dollar state government effort to provide technology resources to schools, which was approved by the legislature in 1997. It is similar to the federal e-rate initiative to provide universal telecommunications service in libraries and schools around the country. The New York Times reported November 18 that the lawsuit could well be the first involving the Internet and the separation of church and state. As of last summer, 36 religious schools had been approved for the subsidies, which amount to about $600 per month for each. Posted November 23, 1998. |
