SLC Expects E-rate Commitments in Mid-NovemberThe Schools and Libraries Corporation has announced that it expects to begin issuing funding-commitment decision letters in mid-November. In an October 28 statement, the agency said it was in the final stages of implementing additional program safeguards as required by the Federal Communications Commission, based on recommendations received in July from the General Accounting Office. When the FCC and GAO are satisfied that all requirements are met, the letters will go out in several waves. Before sending the letters, the SLC plans to provide additional details on its Web site about the process for funding commitment notification. In addition, the agency is currently evaluating the timeframe of the application window for the next funding year, now scheduled to open on December 1, 1998, and to remain open for 80 days.
