Referenda Roundup: Good News for LibrariesPreliminary results indicate that a majority of the library bond measures on the November 3 ballots in communities across the nation passed, some of them by substantial majorities. Voters in Seattle overwhelmingly approved a $196.4-million bond measure to replace its aging central library and add three new branches. Public Information Officer Andra Addison said library staff were "doing handsprings" over the measure, which won a solid 72% of the vote. California taxpayers voted for library renovations in Los Angeles and Santa Monica, Baltimore residents approved funds for a new regional library, and Salt Lake City citizens passed an $84-million measure for a new central library. For information on these and other measures, see the complete report in Referenda Roundup. The report will be updated as new results are received. Posted November 9, 1998. |
