Post Office to Celebrate Redwood
Library and Athenaeum

In 1999 the United States Postal Service will feature the 250-year-old Redwood Library and Athenaeum of Newport, Rhode Island, on a postal card to wrap up its Historic Preservation series of honored U.S. sites.

America's oldest library still in use, the Redwood Library and Athenaeum continues as one of only 18 remaining membership libraries in the nation. Its collection contains over 90% of its original 18th-century books, and also includes an outstanding collection of 18th- and 19th-century portraits and sculpture. According to Cindy Tackett, manager of retail integration for the USPS in Washington, the postal card is scheduled for release March 11, 1999.
