Plano, Texas, Library Board Rejects FiltersReacting to a one-woman crusade for the addition of Internet filtering, the Plano (Tex.) Library advisory board amended its open access policy November 2 to include a warning that viewing child pornography, obscenity, and other illegal material is prohibited by state and federal law. Technical Services Manager Joyce Baumbach told American Libraries the library had received few complaints about its year-old policy until several weeks ago when a patron witnessed two boys looking at nude pictures on a branch library computer. The woman brought the issue before the city council, asking them to do something to protect children. The board unanimously agreed to add the new policy to warning signs already posted by the system's 28 computers. Privacy screens have been installed on monitors for the past year. Baumbach said the board will present its new policy to the city council at its November 9 meeting. Posted November 9, 1998. |
