NYPL Grosses $1.7 Million at Unveiling of Rehabbed Reading RoomThe week before officially reopening after a year's worth of refurbishment, the Rose Main Reading Room of New York Public Library's Center for the Humanities became the venue for two celebrations that drew more than 1,000 people and $1.7 million in donations. On November 9 the library staged a formal Elizabethan-style dinner party that garnered a minimum of $1,500 per plate from several hundred attendees, including former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, George Plimpton, and Bianca Jagger. Three days later, NYPL President Paul LeClerc, board Chairman Marshall Rose, and trustee Sandra Priest Rose and Frederick Fineas Rose (not related to the chairman) presided at a ribbon-cutting attended by more than 1,000 invited guests. Other highlights that evening included opportunities to chat with construction workers about their painstaking work on the project, NYPL spokesperson Caroline Oyama told American Libraries. Originally completed in 1911, the room was recently renamed in honor of Sandra and Frederick Rose, who gave the library $15 million for the rehabilitation in 1995. Posted November 16, 1998. |
