Loudoun County Trustees Pull Internet Plug Instead of FiltersWithin hours of learning November 23 that U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema had permanently enjoined Loudoun County (Va.) Library from enforcing its year-old policy requiring Internet filters on all computers at all times, the board of trustees suspended Internet service to its patrons. "It seems so foolish if she says we have to accept everything or nothing," LCL board member Chris Howlett told the Washington Post November 24 of the court's summary judgment, which favored the citizens group Mainstream Loudoun and some 20 other plaintiffs defended by the American Civil Liberties Union and People for the American Way. Acknowledging that some materials are inappropriate for minors, Brinkema, a former librarian, suggested the use of privacy screens, filtering only children's-area workstations, or enabling adults to temporarily disable blocking software as defensible alternatives. Trustees plan to revisit their swift reaction at an emergency meeting scheduled for December 1. Posted November 30, 1998. |
