Director Resigns over Board's Filtering ApprovalA month after her board unanimously approved the installation of filtering software on children's-area computers systemwide, the director of the Allegany County (Md.) Library has submitted her resignation. Stating that her inability to support the library's policy left her no choice, Jane Rustin said that she told the board November 2 that "my own personal principles preclude me from continuing in this position." "It was a very difficult conclusion," Rustin told American Libraries, "but it was the only conclusion I could come to." Rustin, who became director in 1994, added that she had "a very good relationship" with the board, "except for this one situation in which we have departed." Rustin said she gave the board three months' notice, which she hopes will be sufficient time to finish up some major projects, including the opening of two new buildings and an automation project.
