Who'll Foot the Bill for
the Loudoun County Lawsuit?

In lieu of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors' decision to table an emergency request for $100,000 to continue defending the county library's Internet filtering policy, library trustees have applied another $30,000 of Loudoun County Library funds to its mounting court costs.

Representing some 21 plaintiffs, the ACLU and People For the American Way have sued the library for equipping all its public-access Internet terminals with blocking software. Preliminary hearings are expected to be held the first week of August.

Library Director Doug Henderson told American Libraries that county supervisors will reconsider the board's request at its June 3 meeting, when he also expects to hear who supervisors intend to appoint to replace four trustees (two of whom are pro-filtering) whose terms are expiring June 30.
