SLJ Editor Gerhardt Announces Retirement

Lillian Gerhardt, editor-in-chief of School Library Journal, has announced that she will retire August 31 after 32 years with the magazine, where she began in 1966 as executive editor of SLJ's book reviews and director of R.R. Bowker Company's juvenile projects. She began her career in 1954 as an assistant in the children's department of the New Haven (Conn.) Public Library.

Gerhardt is widely respected for her strong editorial voice in advocacy of children's services. Among the honors she has received during her career was the 1995 ALA Grolier Award for "wise guidance and uncompromising support to an entire generation of children's, young adult, and school librarians."
