Robert Wedgeworth Announces Retirement from University of IllinoisRobert Wedgeworth has announced he will retire as university librarian of the University of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign, effective August 20, 1999. "I had decided before I came to Illinois that I would not work later than the year 2000," said Wedgeworth. Noting that the university will hire a new provost in the coming year, he added "it made more sense to retire as of August 1999." Since Wedgeworth became university librarian in November 1993, the library has developed a comprehensive technology infrastructure. "By any measure one might choose, I believe that I will leave the university library demonstrably stronger than I found it, and well positioned to enter the next millennium." Wedgeworth was executive director of the American Library Association from 1972 to 1985 and dean of Columbia University's library school from 1985 until its closure in 1992, and has twice served as president of IFLA.
