New UC/Berkeley Chancellor
Pledges Support for Library

In his inaugural address as chancellor of the University of California/Berkeley, Robert Berdahl promised April 24 to spend $5.5 million over the next three years to improve the university library. "Our library has fallen seriously behind where it needs to be," Berdahl said during the ceremony. "We cannot allow this to continue. We need to catch up."

Earlier in the month, the library had slipped from second to fifth place in the Association of Research Libraries' annual statistical rankings, reflecting a drop in acquisitions and staff. "By almost any measure you could imagine, Berkeley has declined substantially," Chief Administrative Officer Michael Rancer told the San Francisco Chronicle.

The chancellor's pledge is more than $2 million above the amount recommended earlier this month by a campus blue-ribbon committee.
