Kane Sues for Wrongful Termination

Hawaii State Librarian Bart Kane filed a lawsuit May 18 against the state board of education and seven of its members who voted to fire him at an annual evaluation meeting in February. Kane claims that board members maliciously sought his termination, conspired to misrepresent their intent, and defamed him by saying he was fired for poor work performance, according to the May 19 Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

Kane told reporters he wants to be reinstated as state librarian beyond his June 30 termination date. No amount has been set, but Kane is seeking reimbursement for damages to his reputation, integrity, health, and well-being. Deputy State Attorney General John Dellera told the Honolulu Advertiser May 19 that Kane must prove that board members went beyond their scope before they can be held liable. Interviews with candidates for state librarian are scheduled to begin June 13.
