Funding Measure Squeaks by in ClevelandA ballot measure to fund the Cleveland (Ohio) Public Library eked out a narrow victory May 5, passing by just 185 votes. Issue 4, consisting of a replacement of the library's current 2-mill levy and an additional 1-mill levy, passed by a 27,395 to 27,210 vote. However, library officials aren't yet breathing easy, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, which reported May 7 that election officials won't declare the vote closed for another two weeks, when all of the overseas ballots have come in. Library spokesperson Alan A. A. Seifullah told the newspaper he believed the victory margin would have been larger if a technicality hadn't moved Issue 4 from the fourth position on the ballot to the third. "We got calls from people who voted one way, thinking they were voting on another issue." Posted May 11, 1998. |
