Daddy's Roommate/Heather Flap Erupts in Texas

At least 15 people in Wichita Falls, Texas, have volunteered to buy the public library copies of Daddy's Roommate and Heather Has Two Mommies in protest of the Rev. Robert Jeffress's refusal to return copies brought to him by one of his parishioners.

The Wichita Falls Public Library received challenges in early May from Rev. Ron Killingsworth to both books, which depict parents who are involved in same-sex relationships. Libraries across the country have been dealing with challenges to the picture books since shortly after their 1991 publication.

"The people I've spoken with are very angry the books have been taken," Library Administrator Linda Hughes told the Wichita Times Record May 19.

"Everyone has to make their own decision as to what to do," Jeffress remarked. He has written the library a check for $54 in replacement costs and fines.
