Caribbean Librarians Gather for
Decennial Miami Meeting
Some 280 librarians from 28 countries gathered in Miami May 17–23 for the 28th annual conference of the Association of Caribbean University, Research, and Institutional Libraries (ACURIL), an organization that meets in the United States only once every 10 years.
Conference organizers report that large delegations from the Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela attended. ALA President Barbara Ford delivered the keynote address, "Opening Doors Internationally: The Librarian's Role." ACURIL President Sam Boldrick of the Miami–Dade Public Library System called attention to the "fundamental and profound changes" technology is bringing to libraries in the region, along with "greater demands on us as professionals" and "ever-increasing informational expectations with stagnant budgets, escalating expenses, and diminished staffs."
Conference proceedings will be posted later this year on the ACURIL Web site.
