Britain to Build National Library for WomenThe British government announced May 12 that it plans to build a National Library for Women to celebrate the rise of feminism and the contribution of women to society. The library was launched with a £4.2 million ($6.9 million) grant from Britain's national lottery. In a Reuters report, Labour member of parliament Barbara Follett, who is charged with raising another £2.65 million, said, "The library will acknowledge, celebrate, and record for all time the actions of women pioneers, the many thousands who have made less high-profile contributions, and those in the generations to come." The library will be housed in Aldgate in East London. Posted May 18, 1998. |
