Atlanta Director Resigns
Amid Struggle with Library Board

Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Director Julie Hunter has offered her resignation, effective June 9, ending her lengthy struggle with a library board she accuses of constant micromanagement. "I had grave concerns when I came into this," Hunter told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution May 14, "but I thought if I did a good job, we could make this work because we have a common bond and a common goal. That has not taken place." Hunter has served as director since February 1997, after the retirement of her predecessor Ron Dubberly in 1996.

Her resignation follows an April trustee meeting that rated her performance "deficient" and placed her on probation. However, Jim Maddox, an Atlanta City Council member who also sits on the 17-member library board, told reporters that "a small group who wants to run everything" refused to consider at least one or two positive evaluations.
