ALA Executive Board Calls for Summit on Library Education

Prompted by widespread concern over the direction of library education, the ALA Executive Board at its annual spring meeting, May 2–3 in Washington, D.C., called for a summit on library education "to be conducted no later than the year 2000 ALA Annual Conference."

The recommendation followed lengthy discussions with library educators Ann Prentice of the University of Maryland, Elizabeth Aversa of the Catholic University of America, James Baughman of Simmons College; and Carla Hayden, chair of ALA's Committee on Accreditation, over the perceived shift in library education away from traditional library science and toward high-tech information studies, especially evident in the dearth of children's librarians being graduated and in the removal of the word "library" from many program titles.

Other board actions  included approval of San Diego as the site for Midwinter Meeting 2004 and Chicago for Annual Conference 2005.
