By an almost three-to-one margin, Tulsa voters May 12 punched "yes" to two property tax measures that will provide a $22-million bond issue for the Tulsa City-County Library System. Earmarked to fund a new countywide computer network, new and expanded branches, and heftier collections, the 1.2-millage increase in ad valorem taxes should increase the bite on a $75,000 home by some $16.95 annually, the Tulsa World newspaper reported.
"This is the greatest vote of confidence we could ever have," System Executive Director Linda Saferite told the paper. The package would not only improve service by replacing a 15-year-old automated system, but would also provide a central library facelift.
Saferite said requests for bids would be sent to about 10 companies May 15 so new technology can be in place by summer 1999.
