
Eleven libraries, museums, and historical societies from across the United States were awarded more than $540,000 April 28 in the second round of prizes in the Library of Congress/Ameritech National Digital Library Competition.
The awards are part of a three-year program to digitize millions of historically significant images and make them available over the Internet by the year 2000.
The winners are the Chicago Historical Society, Duke University, the Nebraska State Historical Society, Northwestern University, and the University of Iowa; the University of Miami will share a prize with Florida International University and the Historical Museum of South Florida; the University of Washington will share with the Eastern Washington Historical Society and the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle. They were selected from nearly 70 applications from over 30 states.
