Virginia Legislators Drop Filtering MandateLast week, legislators in Virginia dropped an amendment to an appropriations bill that would have denied state funds to public libraries offering unfiltered Internet access. Sponsored by House Delegate Bob Marshall (R-Prince William County), the Marshall Amendment was tacked onto the appropriations legislation after a bill Marshall introduced January 15 with the same provisions was referred to the House Committee for Courts of Justice. On March 10, People For the American Way President Carole Shields wrote Virginia lawmakers urging them to drop the amendment as "an assault on family values and the ability of parents to raise their children according to their own values." PFAW is engaged in a First Amendment lawsuit against Loudoun County Library over the library's use of Internet filters. Posted March 23, 1998. |
