Storyteller Augusta Baker Dies at 86

Augusta Baker, distinguished nationally as America's first lady of traditional storytelling, died February 23 at the age of 86.

Most recently storyteller-in-residence at the University of South Carolina library school in Columbia from 1980 until her retirement in 1994, in 1953 she joined New York Public Library as an assistant coordinator and storytime specialist and in 1961 became coordinator of children's services.

Her legacy will survive in A(ugusta) Baker's Dozen, a celebration of children's literature sponsored annually in Columbia by the Richland County Public Library and the USC College of Library and Information Science.
