Soros Pledges $20 Million for
Books for Russian Libraries

American financier George Soros announced at a press conference March 4 in Moscow that he will invest $20 million in a program to provide each of some 3,500 provincial libraries in Russia with 1,000 new books a year for three years.

Dubbed the "Pushkin Project," the program is part of a $100-million contribution Soros has pledged to charitable projects in Russia, including museums and health and education programs. He also said he has committed another $20 million to introducing Internet access to the nation's universities.

Soros has stipulated that Russia must gradually take over the financing of the project during the next three years. Russian agencies such as the ministry of education are expected to cooperate, along with the World Bank and a large part of the publishing industry.
