Robert Croneberger Dies at 61Robert Croneberger, director of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh since 1986 and a crucial witness during the challenge to the Communications Decency Act in 1996, died February 27 from complications following heart bypass surgery. During his 35-year career, Croneberger directed the State Library of Tennessee and the Memphis-Shelby County (Tenn.) Public Library and Information Center, and served as deputy director of the Detroit Public Library. Croneberger's testimony was cited three times by federal judges in their decision to declare the CDA unconstitutional. Bruce Ennis, lead counsel for the coalition that challenged the act, called his assistance "truly invaluable," adding that "few people knew of the many, many hours Bob worked tirelessly behind the scenes. . . . Throughout that long and stressful process, Bob was an inspiration to us all." Croneberger was also instrumental in the revitalization of the Urban Libraries Council in 1992 and was a major strategist for its New Directions program. Posted March 9, 1998. |
