Purloined Books Returned to Adams Library

Law enforcement officials returned two historic books to the descendants of President John Adams March 25, nearly 17 months after they and two other volumes were stolen from a display in the library of the Adams National Historic Site in Quincy, Massachusetts. The family immediately turned the books over to the National Park Service, which owns the compound.

The returns coincided with the indictment of Kevin P. Gildea of Quincy, who allegedly cut through an oak door at the library and stole the books after the site closed November 11, 1996. He is already serving a five-year federal sentence in Pennsylvania on an unrelated parole violation.

The two other stolen volumes suffered water damage and are awaiting extensive repairs. The cost of repairs to all four books—three of which are rare Bibles and one a book on fishing—is expected to total $9,000.
