Prince William Board Rejects Internet Restrictions for Minors

At its February 26 meeting the Prince William (Va.) Public Library board rejected a proposal to tighten its newly passed Internet policy. Board member Dennis Daugherty wanted the library to use computer scanners on patrons' library cards to determine their age. If the patron was under 18, access would be restricted to children's-room terminals running Library Channel software that only allows access to 20,000 preselected Web sites.

However, Director Richard Murphy told American Libraries that when Daugherty offered the proposal, the chair ruled the motion out of order since it would alter the Internet policy approved January 22 allowing anyone, including children, to use the unfiltered terminals outside the children's area. At that time the board rejected a proposal by Daugherty to install filters on all the library's computers.
