Five Million Kids "Read Across America"

Declaring its first "Read Across America" campaign on March 2 a nationwide success, the National Education Association, in conjunction with ALA and other literacy groups, estimated that more than five million children and one million adults participated in reading events sponsored by schools, libraries, and bookstores, many featuring Dr. Seuss books on the author's birthday.

Notable participants included First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton at a reading party in District Heights, Maryland; Cal Ripken Jr. reading with kids in a baseball dugout; Kirk Douglas reading to 2,000 children in a Los Angeles theater; House Speaker Newt Gingrich reading in Washington, D.C.; and Vice-president Al Gore reading in Georgia.
