Coalition on Government Information
Presents Madison Awards

Journalist Ben Bagdikian, former Superintendent of Documents Wayne Kelley, federal computer specialist Eliot Christian and the U.S. Geological Survey, and the National Library of Medicine were the recipients of the 1998 James Madison Award, recognizing efforts to promote government openness.

Bagdikian was cited for his work exposing the dangers that exist to the public's rights to information. Kelley, who retired last year after serving the Superintendent of Documents since 1991, oversaw the Federal Depository Library Program. Christian's vision of a Government Information Locator Service became a reality in the federal government with the support of the U.S. Geological Survey. The National Library of Medicine was recognized for its decision to provide free Internet access to the Medline database.

The awards, sponsored by the ALA-led Coalition on Government Information, were presented at a reception at the Library of Congress on March 16, Freedom of Information Day.
