Clinton Announces Initiative
to Put Cultural Treasures Online

President Clinton has announced a policy initiative aimed at "preserving America's cultural treasures" online by putting at least 3 million objects from the Smithsonian Institution, the National Archives, and other historical collections on the Internet by the year 2000, and to provide grants to help private museums and libraries put their collections online as well.

Unveiling the $23-million initiative at a February 26 investors' conference sponsored by BancAmerica Robertson Stephens, the president also touted his program to connect every American classroom to the Internet, reported CNET's News.Com service.

Clinton also announced National Science Foundation grants to connect an additional 29 universities to the Next-Generation Internet, for a total of 92.
