Virginia Lowell Appointed
Hawaii State Librarian
The Hawaii Board of Education voted unanimously June 13 to select Virginia Lowell, director of the Nassau Library System in Uniondale, New York, as replacement for State Librarian Bart Kane, who was fired February 20. Lowell told American Libraries she was chosen over four local candidates because of her expertise in library computer systems; in fact, as director of the Jackson (Mich.) District Library, she had helped install the same Dynix system that Hawaii uses.
"I've been concentrating on developing a good relationship with the staff," Lowell said. "They feel that they have the opportunity to be involved in planning library services, and I want to take advantage of that energy and commitment."
Kane's term ends June 30. Director of Administration Caroline Spencer will serve as acting state librarian until Lowell arrives.
