In a change of policy, the U.S. Senate Committee on Rules and Administration has encouraged senators to put Congressional Research Service (CRS) reports and products on their Web sites.
On June 10, Sen. John Warner (R-Va.) and Sen. Wendell Ford (D-Ky.), the chairman and the ranking member of the committee, wrote senators that "With the rapidly expanding use of the Internet, we believe it is appropriate for Members and Committees to use their web sites to further disseminate CRS products....we encourage you to post CRS products on your web site."
Currently CRS is prohibited from disseminating its work directly to the public, although members of Congress can release CRS products to the public. Legislation currently before the Rules and Administration Committee would require CRS to put on the Internet all information on the CRS secure Web site that is not confidential.
