Second Rape Occurs at Newark Public LibraryFor the second time in just over a month, a teenage girl was raped in Newark Public Library's main branch June 17. The New York Times reported June 19 that a 16-year-old girl was attacked in the second-floor stacks after a man asked her to help him find material for a book report, according to police. The attack followed a May 13 incident in which a 15-year-old girl told police she had been raped in a second-floor restroom; an arrest was made three days later. Mayor Sharpe James, who called the rapes "dastardly acts," demanded that library Executive Director Alex Boyd increase security. Boyd told the Times that the library had already closed the second-floor restrooms following the first rape and that patrons now must request a key to those on the first floor. The library has also increased the number of security guards and plans to install security cameras. Posted June 22, 1998. |
